George F Johnston

July 8, 1949 - May 12, 2022

George F Johnston, 72, of Aberdeen, NJ passed away on May 12, 2022, at Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel, NJ. He was born on July 8, 1949, to Thomas and Gwendoline Johnston in Brooklyn, NY. George grew up in Brooklyn before moving to Staten Island where he met his wife, Joyanne. George and Joyanne began their own family and eventually settled in Aberdeen, NJ. George proudly served in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam war from 1969-1970 before his honorable discharge. He went on to work as an electrician for the United States Coast Guard. George was a man of few words, but always managed to get his point across. He enjoyed many hobbies including photography, gardening and teaching his granddaughter how to play different sports as well as life lessons. He enjoyed spending time and going on long walks with his beloved dogs. George also spent many years coaching his daughter's softball and soccer teams. Above all, George was a devoted family man who always put his family before anything else. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. George is survived by his loving spouse Joyanne M. Johnston; his daughter, Danielle V.J. Layman and her husband Andrew; his granddaughter Lorielai V. Layman; his brothers and sisters Thomas J. Johnston, Lynn Johnston, Paul E. Johnston, Susan Ekelund, Elizabeth Johnston and Andrew Johnston; his beloved dogs Slinky and Kona; as well as many loved nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Sunday, May 22, 2022, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm & 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at Waitt Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 501 HWY 79 Morganville, NJ 07751. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 23, 2022, 11:00 am at St Clement Church, 172 Freneau Ave, Matawan, NJ 07747. Burial will follow at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery, 350 Province Line Rd, Wrightstown, NJ 08562. In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation or the Wounded Warrior Project.
