Delfim Martin

September 29, 1925 - January 8, 2022

Delfim Martin, age 96 of Old Bridge, passed away on January 8, 2022 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Born in New Bedford, MA, Del attended grammar school in Newark before moving to Old Bridge in 1956 where he has resided ever since. He proudly served his country in the army during World War II and received a Bronze Star for his achievements. He was an iron worker, a bicycle telegram delivery boy, a cab driver, a store manager, and worked as the shop manager and mechanic for Ace Trucking and Trailer before his retirement in 1991. Del was well known as a jack of all trades, with a real can-do attitude. An avid gardener, painter, wood worker and mechanic, he enjoyed working with his hands, whether creating or fixing something. Though he enjoyed being active in his hobbies, Del also loved his relaxation time, well spent with a scotch and cigar. He was a devoted NY sports fan, the Yankees, Mets, Jets, and Giants were some of his favorite teams. He loved the game of softball and played for many years. His love for sports was brought to his community when he helped create Del's Field on Rt 516 in Old Bridge which was ultimately named after him. Del proudly remained the parks caretaker for many years. Del loved his family unconditionally, and was a devoted father, and grandfather, and always put his family first. He was a great friend and neighbor, and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Delfim is predeceased by his loving wife of 71 years, Josephine Martin. Delfim is survived by his son, Delfim F. Martin and his wife Jerri; his daughters, Mary Jo Hertlein and her husband Patrick, Kelly Young and her husband Robert, and Jennifer Martin; his grandchildren, Jacqui Martin, Dillon Hertlein, Alexa Hornlein, Timothy Hornlein, and Peggyrose Dowd; and his two beloved cats, Timmy and Tiger. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 13, 2022, 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Old Bridge Funeral Home, 2350 RT 516, Old Bridge, NJ 08857. A Funeral service will be held on Friday, January 14, 2022, 10:00 am at Old Bridge Funeral Home, 2350 RT 516 Old Bridge, NJ, 08857. Entombment will follow at Marlboro Memorial Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The Wounded Warrior Project or St Jude's Children's Hospital in memory of Delfim. Online condolences can be given at www.oldbridgefh.com.
